Event Description from the Instructor:
We will begin our day with a brief presentation by the Nisqually Reach Nature Center staff who will enlighten us on the history of the Nisqually reach and the aspects of the landscape will provide great inspiration. In the comfort of the indoors, I will give a one hour “crash course” on plein air painting. The landscape can be overwhelming! So before even heading outdoors, I will discuss the key fundamentals of design, composition, color, and value and how to break down a scene into manageable chunks. During this session you will practice learning to see simplified shapes in the landscape. This practice of scene selection and composition choices will help streamline your time while “out in the wild”. I will also share tips and tricks before we head outdoors for a full day of painting.
Next, we will head outside where there are many scenes to select from, the Nisqually Nature Center offers beautiful views. I will give a brief demonstration “blocking in” a painting. Then you will choose your viewpoint and sketch 2-3 composition thumbnails.
During then a short lunch break, you will make decisions on your final composition choice. Following lunch, we will move to canvas and beginning your painting. I will come around and work individually with each artist.
During the afternoon break we will discuss refining a painting and bringing it to a finish. After which you will endeavor to bring your painting to a finish. I will offer my thoughts and assistance.
A full day of relaxing demonstrations and personalized instruction, as well as lots of time to paint and as much feedback as you wish, will ensure a boost in your plein air painting skills and lift your confidence to a new level all while treating yourself to creative “me time” and getting away from the daily routine.
Please join me for this fun, informative workshop in the great outdoors.
