How does climate change impact the present and future for your community, your life, your family, and your work? The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reported that a global increase of 1.5 degrees C would cause serious impacts. Guess what? We are now there. For our region this means more intensified storms, flooding, droughts, extreme heat, and wildfire damage and smoke.
Come together with other community members for an honest discussion on how to address the climate crisis in Thurston County. Together we will build shared understanding, generate actionable recommendations, and strengthen democratic engagement by addressing the climate crisis at a local level.
This community engagement session is the third in a series of three community assembly events. You do not have to attend them all, or attend them in order. The immediate goal is to provide community-inspired recommendations for comprehensive planning updates for Olympia, Lacey, Tumwater and Thurston County. For the long-term, we hope to build a mutual aid network for climate projects and advocacy locally.
At this community-led climate planning session we will:
Collaboratively address concerns about climate change and work with others in the community to brainstorm solutions.
Develop comments for local government climate planners to make sure they address the real needs of real people. This will inform long-range local planning decisions and policies.
Connect and find common ground with community members, groups and organizations here in Thurston County.
Leave this planning session with concrete feedback for local government planners.
Build and grow a coalition for climate action in Thurston County.
This event is a collaboration between Thurston Climate Action Team (TCAT), The Center for Climate Action and Sustainability (CCAS) at The Evergreen State College (TESC) and People's Economy Lab (PEL).
