A love story between humans and goats
Lost Peacock Creamery
In a world where so much of our food system takes from the land without giving back, Lost Peacock Creamery is a love story between humans and goats, grounded in respect, sustainability, and the shared joy of creating something truly special together.
Before becoming full-time farmers, Matthew and Rachael were gainfully employed in the corporate world, Matthew as an ER Nurse and Rachael in Health Care Marketing. But before they took the leap and began investing in milking equipment, they began having second thoughts. Was it smart to leave a stable jobs to chase a dream that hinged on a bunch of goats? When a white peacock appeared one day on their fence, seemingly out of nowhere, Rachael told Matthew, “If that’s not a sign, I don’t know what it is.” And so Lost Peacock Creamery was born.
Matthew and Rachael are passionate about creating the most beautiful products they can in a way that honors the land and the animals that call it home. Their goats live outside in large, family-based herds with access to native forage and plenty of space to be themselves. The farm uses solar power to run their milk parlor and cheese room, they irrigate their fields with reclaimed water from the dairy, and they filter all run off through a large bio filter that surrounds the entire property.
What Makes Lost Peacock Creamery Goat Cheese So Special?
The beauty of raising goats in harmony with nature creates a delicious seasonality to their cheese, reflecting the subtle shifts in the goat’s diet and environment throughout the year. One bite and you’re experiencing the rich, nuanced flavors that only come from cheese made with care—each bite is a taste of their land, capturing the essence of the season.
That doesn’t mean making cheese this way is easy. Farming goats (who hate getting wet) in the Pacific Northwest means facing unique challenges, but they’ve been able to work with local resources like the Thurston County Conservation District to help us make sure their farming practices are in harmony with the land.
“We feel so lucky to farm in Thurston County where community support is plentiful,” says Rachael. Whether it’s school field trips, summer camps, farm tours, or selling cheese to their CSA members, every person who steps foot on their property is instantly connected to the goats and the farmers that make their cheese.
