Join weaver Anthony Choke (Nisqually, Chehalis) at Arbutus Folk School to create your own headband out of cedar bark.
Western redcedar is used for many purposes, from utilitarian to decorative. This project is traditional as "everyday clothes" and can be made to your own size and shape, or adapted for use as a hatband, necklace, or other creative uses. Weaving materials are harvested and prepared by the instructor's family, including a year of rolled storage before splitting into strips.
Participants will come home with a completed headband as well as learning about the traditions and significance of the materials and cedar bark weaving. This is a great introduction to cedar bark basketweaving techniques for the beginner in an approachable format.
