Class Description: Most of us can easily imagine both the challenge and reward that comes from making sophisticated, large-scale pieces of furniture. But the series of steps involved in the design, fabrication, and finishing, not to mention the considerable commitment of time required, makes the prospect very daunting indeed. Even professional furniture makers aren’t immune to an occasional reluctance to engage in projects like that. Which is precisely why we so often enjoy setting those things aside for a bit just to have some fun making things that are small and simple and quick.
This hands-on, 3-week, 6-session class, will give students an opportunity to do exactly that. You’ll learn to make precisely fitted and imaginatively finished small boxes that, despite their size and relative simplicity, will be as elegant and sophisticated as any larger piece of furniture. Students can expect to finish 1-2 boxes depending upon student.
Finishing materials are covered by the cost of class but students will pay instructor on the first day of class for lumber. There will be a selection to choose from; the less expensive option being poplar for $10 and a higher end option of either mahogany or cherry ranging from $35 to $50. Please be prepared to pay by check or credit card. Students who wish to make a second box can pay for additional material during class.
